FAQ

What is Sumeru & Seed?

Sumeru & Seed is a creative studio dedicated to transforming real history into structured card systems.

Through Imperion Cards, we explore more than 3,200 years of human civilization by distilling historical conflicts, figures, cities, and forces into carefully designed physical card sets. Our focus is not invention, but interpretation—presenting history in a form that invites strategic thought, reflection, and personal engagement.

What are Imperion Cards?

Imperion Cards are physical, history-driven card sets inspired by documented civilizations, wars, and strategic realities.

Each edition focuses on a specific historical chapter and presents its core elements—people, cities, armies, and events—through cards designed to convey meaning, relationships, and consequence. The system emphasizes historical logic and strategic reasoning rather than randomness or abstract balance.

Why do some products say “Imperium Cards” while others say “Imperion Cards”?

Imperium Cards was the original name used during the early development and initial releases of the project.

As the universe expanded, Sumeru & Seed formally adopted Imperion Cards as the official sub-brand name and has filed for trademark protection under this name. This change reflects the project’s long-term vision and its evolving structure, rather than any change in product, team, or philosophy.

Beginning with Edition III, the project transitions fully to the Imperion Cards name across packaging and materials.

As a result, some earlier editions may still display the name Imperium Cards. These products are authentic, fully compatible with current and future releases, and represent the formative phase of the project’s development. While all editions function within the same card system and universe, early releases may be of particular interest to long-term collectors as part of the project’s documented history.

Is this a board game, card game, or role-playing game?

Imperion Cards are best understood as a card-driven historical strategy system, rather than a traditional board game or role-playing game.

Each card contains carefully researched historical information, but the system does not enforce a single fixed rule set. Instead, players are invited to interpret, adapt, and define how the cards interact.

Much like a standard deck of playing cards has no universal way to be played, Imperion Cards place creative authority in the hands of the player. You decide how conflicts are resolved, how stories unfold, and what outcomes emerge.

The cards may be collected, studied, or used for guided or free-form play. They can be enjoyed alone or with others.

Is the game suitable for beginners?

Yes.

While Imperion Cards reward strategic thinking and historical understanding, no prior experience with strategy games or historical simulations is required. Players can engage with the cards at their own pace, learning through exploration rather than memorization of rules.

What does the Core Set include?

The Core Set contains the complete card system needed to experience the featured historical scenario.

Each Core Set includes 20 cards, along with an overview booklet. Some editions may also include a map, depending on the historical context of the chapter. The overview introduces the card types and provides historical background on the major campaigns and conflicts of the edition.

Compared to Booster Packs, the Core Set contains a higher concentration of SR, SSR, and UR cards, representing the most important figures, cities, and forces that define the central narrative of the historical chapter.

The Core Set establishes the foundation of the story and the primary Imperium powers involved.

No separate rulebook is included.

What does a Booster Pack include?

Each Booster Pack also includes 20 cards, packaged in a simpler box without an overview booklet or map.

Booster Packs typically contain more army units and fewer central characters, with card rarities generally weighted slightly lower than those found in the Core Set. This reflects their role as complementary content rather than narrative foundations.

All cards in Booster Packs are designed as additions to the Core Set, introducing side characters, auxiliary forces, and parallel storylines. They function much like historical side accounts—external perspectives that enrich the main narrative without duplicating it.

Booster Packs are not blind boxes. All content is intentional, meaningful, and designed to expand the experience. Collecting one Core Set and one Booster Pack per Edition provides a complete and sufficient card system for play, exploration, and storytelling.

Do I need previous editions to play Edition I?

No. Each Core Set is fully standalone.

Edition I – The Second Punic War can be explored and enjoyed independently without owning any previous or future editions.

Will there be more editions in the future?

Yes. An overview of the long-term structure can be found on our Chapters page.

Over the next four years, Sumeru & Seed plans to release seven historical Chapters, each representing a major era in human civilization. Details and progress can be followed on our Chapters page.

Each Chapter consists of multiple Editions. Every Edition focuses on conflicts between two or more Imperium powers, presenting their confrontation through a distinct historical narrative.

Each Edition introduces multiple card types, including cities, characters, armies, artifacts, commodities, luxury items, and additional rare categories as the system evolves.

With the exception of a limited overlap in army cards between Core Sets and Booster Packs—reflecting the scale and continuity of military forces—other card types do not repeat. There are no blind packs, and no duplicated content that requires repeated purchases.

You do not need to buy the same Core Set or Booster Pack more than once. Collecting one Core Set and one Booster Pack from each Edition provides a complete and sufficient card system for play, collection, and exploration.

Imperium Cards do not dictate a single outcome. You are the director of the story. We provide the historical structure—what you build from it is your decision.

Why do you use credit-card material instead of traditional paper cards?

Imperion Cards are designed to be handled, arranged, and carried differently from traditional trading cards.

Each card is made using credit-card grade material, with a thickness of approximately 1 mm. For comparison, most traditional paper trading cards are around 0.30–0.35 mm thick, while standard credit cards are typically 0.8 mm thick.

This material choice allows Imperium Cards to withstand frequent handling without bending, creasing, or degrading like paper cards. Players can confidently lay out formations, rearrange units, and interact with the cards repeatedly during play.

Imperion Cards measure 3 6/16 inches by 2 6/16 inches, slightly smaller than traditional TCG card sizes. This proportion was chosen intentionally to allow tighter spatial arrangement for strategic positioning, making it easier to organize armies, cities, and forces on a table.

The durability of the material also allows players to select favorite cards and carry them in a wallet without worrying about damage—something not possible with standard paper cards.

This material choice reflects our philosophy: Imperium Cards are not disposable components, but durable artifacts designed to support long-term play, collection, and personal connection.
