From the Trojan War of the Greek world, to the battles of Horus in ancient Egypt, to the Battle of Muye that marked the fall of the Shang and the rise of the Zhou, this chapter explores civilizations where gods, heroes, and kings walked the same battlefield. ย 

Half myth, half history โ€” the foundations of memory itself.

Age of Spears & Arrows (c.500-200 BCE)

The age of expansion and encounter.

From the Persian Wars at Thermopylae, where the Achaemenid Empire advanced westward against the Greek world, to the eastward march of the Macedonian phalanx under Alexander, Greek spears met Persian curved blades, Indian war elephants, and the disciplined armies of the East.ย 

At the far end of the world, the rising Qin state forged an empire through the glaive and the crossbow โ€” an encounter immortalized today by the Terracotta Army. This chapter is about civilizations seeing each other for the first time, through war.

Belief becomes the axis of war.

In the West, the Christian world and the Islamic world collide in a series of conflicts fueled by faith, ambition, and sacred claims. Crusades and counter-crusades plunge entire regions into chaos, where belief justifies conquest and ideology burns as fiercely as steel.

In the East, a different world takes shape. The Song dynasty presides over one of the most advanced economic and urban civilizations of its time โ€” defined by commerce, technology, and cultural refinement rather than constant expansion.

Yet prosperity does not guarantee security. As faith-driven wars consume the West and wealth concentrates in the East, a question emerges across Eurasia: what force could shatter both belief and prosperity alike?
